There are not many books on counseling and psychotherapy published in India. Most of the published works are written in a format that simulates the models that are available in other cultural contexts. This work stands out from others in many ways.

The book is well-organized in 10 sections and under each section there are several chapters, which are organized in a logical manner that makes it easy to maneuver through. The first section deals with different aspects of counseling, goals, stages and process of counseling. The second section deals with problems that are often experienced by normal individuals, children and the issues involved in the marital relationship and the culture specific issues of "in-laws," which is not dealt in any other books that are available. The section three on mental disorders is titled aptly as "identify mental disorders and refer," which clearly provides the information for a counselor/lay counselor to identify the major disorders and to refer to the appropriate professional for further management. The "take home" message provided at the end of each chapter under this section would help a new entrant to counseling to understand the gravity of the disorders. Section four deals with "good" counseling as well as do's and don'ts in counseling, which cautions the novice counselor about the factors that facilitates counseling and the dangers of counseling. From the counseling practice perspective section five provides case records, written based on the real experience of different lay counselors, in dealing with divergent problems. This helps the reader to understand the scope, the challenges and the limitations of counseling.

Grouping mental retardation under mental disorders may not go well in educating the lay counselors that these persons are not to be considered as having a "mental illness" but are persons who are "differently abled." Slightly better care in copyediting would have made the reading easier without interruption.

The book provides a number of case illustrations, that helps in understanding a client and helping out which is a complex process, but the author has done it in an exceptional manner and hence that a lay person does not get entangled in the divergent and paradoxical theories of personality. The book can be prescribed as a premier reader to anyone who wants to know the nuances of counseling or take up counseling as a profession. It may motivate the novel reader not only to venture into the fascinating world of counseling, but also entice one to take up advanced studies in counseling.
