Many of us feel that Mental Healthcare Act 2017 was not at all necessary. Some modifications in Mental Health Act 1987 would have sufficed. It is also true that despite being a major stake holder, we did not get invitation to be a partner in the process of drafting the Act. And we must put on record that our representations were neither honoured nor taken into consideration. But once the act is a reality, we have to know each and every aspect of it because it has practical and legal implications in day to day practice.

I congratulate Hony. Editor and his team for bringing out this very special supplement of Indian Journal of Psychiatry and hope our members will be better equipped after reading articles from the experts of the field.

- Vinay Kumar

Hony General Secretary
