It indeed is a matter of pride and immense satisfaction to find that we are organising our 69th annual national conference at Raipur, the capital city of Chattisgarh. This is for the first time that a conference of this level is being held here. Over the past few years we are focussing on taking psychiatry to areas where awareness of mental health issues generally is less than optimal. Conferences of this nature, besides providing opportunities for professional upgradation, serve to create much needed awareness not only in the minds of people but also in that of powers that be. The resulting spinoffs could not be anything but salutary.
The "Sea horse" state of Chattisgarh, land of 36 forts literally,is a land where tradition and modern merge in seamless harmony. Lord Rama moved around here in Dandakaranya during his long exile from Ayodhya as did the Buddhist monks of yore much before the Common Era. Raipur, the capital city, boasts of being the biggest steel market of the country with over a hundred steel mills. The country's trains run on the rails solely produced at the Bhilai Steel Plant which is just half an hour drive from Raipur. Chattisgarh gives spark to the nation's drive by producing a substantial portion of its electricity requirement.
Indigenous people constitute a sizeable proportion of its population. Their many traditional forms of dance, music and arts will surely bring the sorely needed respite to your much wrought little grey cells. And if you are for it you can top the exquisite experience with a swig or two of the famous Bastar Beer! And the venue - you shall see that two eyes are less than enough to drink the view!
With a faculty of mental health luminaries drawn from all parts of globe and the country the conference itself is designed to serve a delectable spread of professional fare replete with topics touching on current concerns, advancements and bright things looming large in the horizon for better mental health care of the people.
I have the honour and privilege of welcoming all delegates and distinguished guests to ANCIPS 2017. I am sure we will witness the makings of a piece of history for psychiatry in India here at Raipur. Be a part of it.
Let us meet, renew filial bonds, deliberate, learn skills and share knowledge with a firm step on the soil and an eye on the future.
Long live Indian Psychiatric Society
