I began my editing odyssey in the year 2004 when I took over the reins of the principal publication of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS)–the prestigious Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJP) which was truly the scientific symbol of Indian psychiatry. Today, 12 years later, I pen this review as the proud editor of a journal whose visibility and readership has grown exponentially and which presently stands as one of the most important scientific pillars and academic symbols of world psychiatry.
It is unbelievable how fast time has moved on as the editor of this journal. Upon taking over the post, the objective was to improve the quality and content of the journal and ensure on-time publication, as well as to make the journal an internationally renowned and recognized one. It was a coveted role in which I believed I would be able to facilitate the communication of scientific appraisals with honesty, enterprise, and integrity. Looking back, the journey has truly been a remarkable learning experience and I have come to appreciate that scientific editing is a very challenging assignment; one that comes with a great responsibility. It is also a role that has been fascinating and immensely enjoyable, which has been interspersed with challenges that have helped me grow, learn, and expand my own skillset.
As a team, the enriching experience helped shape our scientific temperaments and flair for writing, as we coped with the nuances of scientific publication on a day-to-day basis. The editorial team has made robust efforts throughout the years to uphold the integrity of authentic science and ethical publishing. A hawk's eye prevailed on all the articles received, on the authors, subeditors as well as the reviewers for any editorial misconduct, independent and regardless of the countries they were from or the status of the authors. This sincerity has been unwavering and has been successful in preventing the incidences of duplicate publication, fabrication of data, plagiarism, conflict of interests, and similar authorship issues. Credibility and transparency is the fundamental linchpin of medical publishing and it gives me immense satisfaction to have upheld this governing principle throughout my tenure.
Despite these efforts at improving the content of submitted articles, there have been incidences of unbiased rejections which went as high as 90% in the last decade. This statistic is by no means a picture of the dearth of the quality of the articles being submitted, but is merely a reflection of the sheer magnitude of the scientific manuscripts we received and have had to process every month and which was essential to maintain the high standards in scientific publication we set for ourselves.
The importance of indexing a journal on a popular online database cannot be emphasized enough. It permits search ability and the opportunity for the article to be cited extensively and therefore, signifies a journal of superior quality. Authors are also more likely to send their research to an indexed journal and consequently, it was imperative to get the journal indexed in PubMed. We were fortunate to get the IJP indexed in PubMed in the year 2009. The readership has presently grown considerably and the authorship is now international.
My vision, from the beginning, has been to produce a journal of practical importance–specifically, to help our young readers–the budding psychiatrists treat the next patient who walks through that door, to render them competent enough to handle any kind of case or patient. The introduction of sections on CME articles and an array of review articles from experts all around the globe has helped us deliver comprehensive knowledge about various topics on mental health. The Letters to the Editor submitted by our readers have helped maintain the high standards and quality of the journal by constructively facilitating peer-to-peer communication, sharing of similar experiences, observations, opinions, and interpretations of various aspects of mental health care in India and mental health issues which have social implications, including suggestions regarding the current educational practices for graduates and postgraduates across the country. The research papers which have been awarded the Marfatia Award, the Bhagawat Award, and the Tilak Venkoba Rao Oration Award have been published in the journal annually, extending incentive to the aspiring postgraduates to conduct original research and to cultivate their interest in writing academic articles. The Case Conferences/Grand Rounds in Psychiatry section have helped elucidate the diagnostic dilemmas involved in different psychiatric presentations and therapeutic difficulties encountered in various clinical settings such as the nuances of pharmacotherapy, the underlying need to amalgamate pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy, and pertinent psychosocial interventions, thereby acting as a potent tool of learning and a training technique for prospective psychiatrists. The Viewpoints on diverse topics published by experienced authors contribute dependable opinions and conclusions on different controversial issues which have been debated upon by the academic community. This section also includes multiple perspectives which are provided by the patients, their caregivers, and their health-care professionals, consequently providing insight into the changes which occur in the quality of life during the entire course of the disease, rather than just the exclusive scientific information about the disease. The section "Miscellany" had its own indelible mark consistently covering various historical ideas seen through the prism of the modern days. The Literary Psychiatry section deals with commentaries on nonacademic works related to mental health in myriad art forms such as poetry, prose, drama, and fiction. Sections on "Art and Psychiatry" and "Book Reviews" have helped expand our creative repertoire and have further endorsed our objective of being a journal that meets the tastes of a wide spectrum of readers with diverse interests. The History of Psychiatry section contains articles written on the historical aspects of human behavior and endeavors to explore how the age-old customs and practices have influenced our current lifestyle and mental health.
Over the years, we have actively published manuscripts with a public health importance as well. We are harboring an epidemic population of patients with mental health illness and we are in a position to collect a wealth of information from these patients. Using these resources, we are generating a profusion of knowledge to be used for the well-being of our patients. What we need is a robust system of data collection and trained researchers who can distil the data and help enhance our understanding of mental health further. Evidently, the journal is moving in the right direction, as it serves as a window to the academic world by providing insight about the implications of these research findings. We had the privilege of hosting and publishing some of the most sought after Clinical Practice Guidelines and Supplements on various aspects time-to-time. Infact, our website and archives are the treasure house of psychiatric literature and work. As the field of mental health continues to expand as both a scientific discipline and a global movement, the advances are exciting, the processes are enduring, and I am proud to say that the IJP has consistently been one of the first platforms to deliver these recent scientific breakthroughs from round the world.
The IJP has traditionally been supported by the IPS and I would like to thank all the office bearers and Executive Committees of the IPS during the past 12 years who have offered unparalleled support to this journal. I would like to express my earnest gratitude to all the reviewers of the IJP, which remains an enduring symbol of their commitment to academics. They have reviewed articles selflessly without the hope of any symbolic recognitions or rewards. Their dedication and enthusiasm has never ceased to amaze me, and their work is indeed an epitome of the true academic spirit. The contributors from far and wide have enriched the content value of the journal and helped expand its reach. Last but not the least, I would like to thank and appreciate the endeavors of my editorial team. Every venture is only as strong as its foundation and I have been extremely fortunate to have the services of these extraordinary individuals as my cornerstone. They have been the guiding force, the unsung heroes, carrying this journal to its publication and then to your mailbox, year after year.
The future of scientific publishing lies consolidated with digital technology. Printed copies, while reducing in importance, will still remain eternally relevant, but academic publishing has to evolve with technology. Increasingly, readers have preferred to access content on handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets, which means that journals will have to balance the demands of a wide array of readers. Keeping this in mind, we were able to launch the IJP APPs on the IOS and Android platforms. The engaging multimedia format with its easy-to-access portal has been widely appreciated and has been instrumental in consolidating our growing readership. The IJP is now truly "just a click away!"
The future of the IJP is unquestionably bright. We have come a long way in the last 12 years and we have further heights to scale and horizons to ascend. It has been a pleasure and a great honor to have been the editor of this prestigious journal and I wish the journal and the new team the very best in their endeavors.
