Dear Delegates and Members
Greetings from the office of Hony General Secretary!
The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) organized its first annual conference in 1948 in Patna, and it was registered as a professional body there only in the same year. The caravan which started with a handful of members has grown to considerable size and so has been its contributions in pursuing the goal of mental health for all. We are tirelessly contributing in establishing, guiding, and monitoring the standards of mental health care in tandem with the latest developments.
This is my second and final year in the office of Hony General Secretary, and I must admit that the legacy which I got enriched and inspired me to meet the challenges ahead. I had promised myself and the membership at large to work for making IPS an audible voice and visible force, and now I feel satisfied to some extent for keeping those promises. If 2018 was the year of successfully voicing the scientific truth for the dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender subpopulation, 2019 will be remembered for forcing the Bollywood to bow down and change the name of a derogatory titled film from “Mental Hai Kya” to “Judgementall Hai Kya.” Till date, we have been studying the impact of such films, but now, we have learned to say stop humiliating persons with mental illness.
Apart from this, we have issued four position statements: Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test (DMIT), Specific learning disability (SLD), and other neurodevelopmental disorders, buprenorphine use, and stem cell therapy.
Our three commercial publications are doing well, and we have received good amount as royalty from our publisher. You will be pleased to know that IPS' Publication Subcommittee is all set to bring 13 more books. All other subcommittees, specialty sections, and taskforces are also doing a wonderful job. We have done more than fifty scientific programs including the first-ever Webinar from the Community Psychiatry Speciality Section.
The Scientific Committee has worked hard to make highly enriching scientific program not only befitting with the theme of the conference but also reflecting the width and depth of psychiatry as a multifaceted subject.
It is great to have the Annual National Conference of IPS in the city of art, culture, and literature. Dr. Randip Ranjan Ghoshroy, the Chairperson of the organizing committee, is a true leader who has mentored many of us to work for IPS and the organizing secretary Dr. Gautam Saha is simply a powerhouse of energy and a super resource mobiliser. I am sure all the delegates will feel the warmth and richness of hospitality.
Happy new year and happy conferencing!
