Fellow members, honorable friends, and distinguished guests,

As we welcome the 20th year of the third millennium, our hearts ring out loud the welcome bells of the forthcoming 72nd Annual Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) (ANCIPS-2020) to be held from January 22, 2020, to January 25, 2020, at ITC Royal Bengal and ITC Sonar, Kolkata.

ANCIPS is the flagship annual event of the IPS, and this year, over 5000 delegates across the continents have promised to make a huge effort to join us in this City of Joy. On behalf of the entire fraternity, we are deeply appreciative and offer you our most grateful welcome. We extend our cordial greetings to over 100 international faculty members from the UK, the USA, Australia, Brazil, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Syria, Canada, Thailand, and the SAARC countries. It is indeed our honor and privilege to be hosting the presidents, deans, and secretary generals of different international associations and colleges of the world at the “City of Palaces.”

The theme of this year's conference is “Smart Psychiatry in Digital Era.” Through a number of deliberations, this theme will explore the new approaches in the art of mind healing and attempt to define and develop a meaningful smartness in our discipline. The 4 days of academic fiesta, with over 500 workshops, symposiums, and free papers spread across 14 halls in the impressive venue, will give us the perfect opportunity to learn and develop meaningful ways of delivering our services in a challenging era, where not only the material world, but at times human behavior and relationships have also faced the turbulence of digitalization.

On the morning of January 22, 2020, the Continuing Medical Education program will be inaugurated by Prof Debasis Bhattacharyya, Director of Medical Education, at the venue. The eminent speakers will be talking on a wide range of topics from recent advances in treatments to training, technology, and tele-psychiatry.

Inauguration of the conference will be on the same evening at the majestic venue. We will be blessed by Swami Atmapriyanandaji, Vice-chancellor of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Belur Math, and Hon'ble Retd. Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi. Please join us to make this occasion an unforgettable event where the ancient philosophies will meet the modern innovations, where unity and fellowship will triumph over the fragmentation in knowledge and processes, so that we strive together in delivering a universal mental health care to our society.

Sports lovers will be delighted with the spectacular arrangements of IPPL, where our five zones will be battling out to receive the winners' trophy from our renowned veteran cricketer Mr. Arun Lal.

Friends, we have the honor of inviting you to join us for the historic preconference “Walk for Mental Health” on the morning of January 21, 2020, at Salt Lake City where 1500 participants from schools, colleges, nongovernmental organizations, blind schools, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities will walk with diplomats, bureaucrats, spiritual leaders, lawyers, doctors, police, politicians, eminent sports persons, cyclists, and bikers. With the beating of the traditional drums, we will usher in a climate where mental health is championed without the air of stigma and we can proudly proclaim “No Health Without Mental Health.” So, supporting this noble cause “Let's Walk Together, Let's Work Together.”

Another first is the public event on the Mental Health Awareness Program 2020 on the afternoon of January 21, 2020, at the Science City Auditorium. We are inviting students from schools and colleges across the country and beyond to participate in essay writing, articles, posters, and photography competitions on topics and features related to mental health. This afternoon will see a galaxy of intellectuals passionately sharing their ideas on the topic of “Mental Health, Mental Illness, Society, and Us,” with mind plays performed by local psychiatrists to spread the awareness of mental health. Be a part of this momentous occasion.

We will be paying our tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birthday and welcome you all to join us at the conference venue at 8 a.m. on January 23, 2020, and mark this important national event.

We have also worked in partnership with the Government Arts College and will be sharing with you some soul-stirring images of display of artwork in our ANCIPS Art Gallery at the conference venue. They say a “picture speaks a thousand words” and truly, ladies and gentleman, there will be for us to hear many unspoken words in these canvasses.

On the final day, we are hosting a “Physician–Psychiatrist Interface” where eminent clinicians from other medical disciplines will take part in a thought-provoking panel discussion to debate and decide the implications of the role of mental health in their clinical practice. As you prepare to bid adieu to the city, be part of this vibrant discussion that will keep you thinking on your journey back home.

We appeal to you to make a pledge to protect our environment for our future generations and support the #SayNoToPlastic in this conference. The entire 5 days will be plastic free from the organizers and we will be delighted to serve you steaming tea in dainty earthen cups.

Kolkata has been fortunate to host this conference after 8 years, and though the name has changed since 2001, the friendship and adda over chay has remained the same for decades. We have tried our best to make these 4 days a perfect blend of scientific and gastronomical feast and made arrangements for you to spend warm entertaining nights in three of the most exotic venues in the city and dance to the versatile songs of the prominent Indian singer K.K. and rock at our own talent night performances.

Kolkata is well connected nationally and internationally, so travel and stay will relax you in the pleasant weather of January. Arrangements are in place for you to visit the historical tourist destinations in the state.

We welcome you to the City of Joy. We are only the instruments with the responsibility of organizing, you are the orchestra, without whom the music will be in disharmony.

Long live IPS

Jai Hind.
