Forensic Psychiatry is a sub-specialty of Psychiatry, in which scientific and clinical expertise is applied to legal issues in the context of civil, criminal, correctional or legislative matters. This specialty is yet to develop in India to the desired levels. Rights of the mentally ill have too far been neglected in this country for decades. The National Mental Health Programme is yet to become a reality. The new Mental Health Care Bill of India 2013, is yet to hit the LokSabha for becoming a reality, where amendments are due, keeping in tune with the rights of the mentally ill and the standard of psychiatric care in this country. Reaching the unreached is still a problem in many Asian countries. This IJP Supplement has been made possible with the help of contributions from all over the world including India. Today's psychiatry in India needs a greater interface between mental health and the legal system, in not only ensuring the dignity of the patients, but also providing meaningful care. The law is omnipotent in the practise of psychiatry. Legal knowledge is not only desirable for practising psychiatrists, but also mandatory.
The laws of Persons with Disability Act with amendments, the POCSO Act and the Domestic Violence Act have added a further fillip on Forensic Psychiatry. This IJP Supplement is being done with the help of the organizing committee of International Academy of Law and Mental Health Asia Pacific Conference being held at Bangalore from 15-17 th December 2016 at MVJ Medical College and NIMHANS, Bangalore. We are also pleased to bring the abstracts of all the presentations being done at this conference. This special IJP Supplement has 9 articles from India and abroad. Hope this will kindle interest in Indian psychiatrists.
